Ask your logbook once.
It keeps answering.
A Smart List is a saved, live filter. Define the criteria once — every deco dive below 30 metres, every night dive with photos, every dive on your backup regulator — name it, and reopen it anytime. The list re-runs against your current log, so it's never stale.
Log a new dive that matches and it's already in the list. No re-filtering, no maintenance.
Build the filter. Save the question.
Tap the filter button on the dive list and a rule builder opens — field, operator, value, with live results underneath that tap through to dive detail. Happy with it? "Save as New" turns the ad-hoc filter into a named Smart List. A Smart Lists hub lets you open, rename, reorder, and delete them.
Under the hood, every list compiles to parameterized SQL against a fast local index — every value bound, injection-safe, quick even on a multi-thousand-dive log. Criteria are stored as portable JSON, so future filter dimensions slot in without touching your data.
Results aren't a plain text list, either. Smart List rows use the photo-rich dive row — hero photo, site, depth, badges — so scanning a filtered list feels like scanning your logbook, not a query result.
Around 20 dimensions. Combine any of them.
Filter on when, where, how deep, how long, what you breathed, what you wore, who you were, and what you saw. The set has grown with tester feedback — Dive Types and Tags, "Has Photos", and "At a Wonder" all arrived because testers asked for them.
Not just AND. Not just OR. Both, nested.
Most filter UIs make you choose: match all rules, or match any. Real questions mix the two. Smart Lists support nested AND/OR groups, so a single list can express:
The editor offers one level of "Add Group", which covers almost every question a diver actually asks — and the engine underneath handles deeper trees, so imported or hand-built criteria aren't limited to it.
Text fields also take "is any of" with a distinct-value picker — pick three sites, five buddies, or two computers from a list of what's actually in your log, instead of typing exact strings.
Each list keeps its own order.
A "Deepest Dives" list wants depth descending. A "This Trip" list wants oldest first. Every Smart List carries its own sort — any sortable field, ascending or descending, defaulting to newest-first — saved with the list, not with the app. Switch lists and the order switches with them.
Smart Collections, in the sidebar.
On macOS, saved Smart Lists live in the sidebar as Smart Collections — the same place your Library, Trips, and Sites live. Click one and the main table filters and sorts to its criteria; edit, create, and delete without leaving the sidebar.
On iPhone and iPad, the same lists sit behind the dive list's filter button. One set of lists, synced, on every device.
If you live in SmartLogs, you'll feel at home.
Smart Lists are DeepSix Dive Log's equivalent of MacDive's SmartLogs: saved criteria, always evaluated live against the current log, sitting in a sidebar on the Mac. If SmartLogs are the reason you've stayed put, that reason is gone.
And because DeepSix imports your MacDive logbook — dives, gear, photos, sites — your lists have your whole history to run against from day one.
What question would you ask your logbook?
Smart Lists are in the app today. Build one against your own log and see what surfaces.
