Accessibility

A logbook every diver can read.
Here is where that stands.

We want DeepSix Dive Log to work for divers who use larger text, a dark screen, VoiceOver, or plainer language. This page says what works in the current version and what does not yet, so you can decide before you download. On the App Store we only claim an accessibility feature once every common task works with it.

What works today

Dark and light DeepSix follows your device’s appearance, or you can keep it dark (or light) all the time with the Appearance setting, under Display in Settings. On Apple TV the interface is dark throughout.
Text size On iPhone and iPad, text follows the size you set in iOS, and nearly all of it uses Apple’s text styles so it grows with you. You can also set a text size just for DeepSix with Custom Text Size, in the same place.
Plain language The Reading Style setting switches DeepSix to Simplified English: shorter sentences and common words, in the interface and in Help.
VoiceOver On iPhone, iPad and Mac, buttons that show only an icon have spoken names, and every chart announces what it is. On Mac the same text appears as a tooltip when you hover.
Color is not the only cue Dive types and environments pair their color with a glyph, calculated traces on the dive profile are dashed as well as colored, and status pills carry a number or symbol.
Keyboard on Mac Common actions have keyboard shortcuts, shown beside each command in the menus.

What we are still building

Very large text At the largest accessibility text sizes a few screens crowd or cut off a value. We are testing every main screen at the maximum size and fixing what breaks.
Reduce Motion DeepSix does not yet respond to Reduce Motion. Its animations are short and decorative (cards opening, the map moving to a dive), and we are making them stop when Reduce Motion is on.
VoiceOver, end to end Headings for the rotor, a spoken summary of the dive profile, and full VoiceOver support on Apple TV and Apple Watch are still to come. We have not yet walked every task with VoiceOver, so we do not claim it.
Voice Control Icon-only buttons need names you can say. That work follows the VoiceOver pass.
Contrast Some secondary text is fainter than it should be. We are raising it to the usual 4.5 to 1.
Reduce Transparency Cards and toolbars should turn solid when Reduce Transparency is on. That is planned.

Video in DeepSix is your own dive footage, so there are no captions or audio descriptions to offer.

Tell us what gets in your way

If something in DeepSix is hard to read, hear or reach, email [email protected] and say which screen and which device. A person reads every message.
