Intelligent by default. Private by design.
DeepSix Dive Log identifies the fish in your photos, writes the history of the wreck you explored, and tells you whether the reef you dived is under bleaching stress — automatically, in the background, using the same data sources researchers use.
No subscription. No cloud lock-in. Your API key, your data, your logbook.
Four layers. Each one picks up where the last left off.
AI in DeepSix isn't one thing. It's a pipeline — four distinct layers with different capabilities, costs, and connectivity requirements. Every layer that can run offline does. The ones that need the cloud queue silently and run when you reconnect.
Runs on every device, every import, instantly. Detects animals in frame, returns broad taxonomy — order and family. No internet, no API key, no cost. Every photo you import gets scanned before you've left the dock.
A free downloadable specialist that runs on the Neural Engine — around 500 marine species, about 10 ms per photo, no account, no API key, no internet after the one-time 63 MB download; species updates are a megabyte or two. Built clean-room on Meta's DINOv2 and iNaturalist Open Data, with the benchmark published. Suggestions always wait for your review.
Point DeepSix at a vision model you run yourself — Ollama, LM Studio, or MLX, on your Mac or anywhere on your network. It pre-identifies species with full dive context — GPS, depth, water temp, date — and queues suggestions in a review surface where you confirm or correct. No cloud, no key, no per-photo cost.
The cloud tier — Anthropic or OpenAI, your choice, with automatic failover between them. The model receives the full photo plus GPS, depth, temp, date, and a pre-filtered candidate list from DeepSix's bundled species database. It confirms or corrects the earlier suggestion, returns the scientific name, family, genus, and a calibrated confidence score. Also handles reef and wreck narratives, travelogue generation, and paper log OCR.
Vision runs first. Critter Expert suggests. Your local model refines. The cloud confirms. Each step builds on the last — and each one works without the next.
"Every photo I import gets scanned before I've left the dock."
Your AI calls never touch DeepSix. No intermediary.
Every cloud AI call goes directly from your device to api.anthropic.com or api.openai.com — DeepSix is never in the middle. Your API key is stored in your iCloud Keychain and syncs across your devices encrypted. DeepSix never sees it.
Photos sent for identification are processed and discarded — not retained by the provider beyond the API session. Vision processing never leaves your device, and a local model runs entirely on hardware you own.
Stored in your iCloud Keychain · encrypted · never transmitted to DeepSix
Device → api.anthropic.com or api.openai.com — no relay, no proxy, no middleman
Processed per-session · not retained by the provider beyond the API call
Vision and the free fish model run on-device · your local model runs on hardware you own · nothing to any cloud
UDDF export is always free. Your data is never held hostage to an active API key or subscription. DeepSix stores your dives in your words — AI is optional commentary, not the record.
Every field AI touches, you can touch too.
AI is an accelerant, not a dependency. Every AI-assisted feature has a complete manual path — because you shouldn't need an API key to log a dive.
No API key? No problem. DeepSix stores your data in your words. AI is optional commentary, not the record itself.
"I don't have an API key. I don't want one.
DeepSix still logs my dives."
Core features work everywhere. AI enriches when available.

* When your local model server is reachable — it's your Mac or LAN, so "offline" from the internet still counts. Conditions enrichment and photo color correction are not AI — they're algorithms and APIs. They appear here for completeness.
Four modes. You choose how much AI runs.
Nothing configured at all. Vision runs on import, and Critter Expert — a free on-device model, one 63 MB download, no account, no key — suggests species offline. Suggestions always wait for your review.
Vision runs immediately on import. Your local model pre-identifies and queues suggestions for review. Your cloud provider — Anthropic or OpenAI, with automatic failover — confirms when online.
Vision plus a vision model you run yourself — Ollama, LM Studio, or MLX on your Mac or LAN. Nothing touches a cloud. Suggestions land in a review queue; you confirm.
Skip local analysis. Send photos directly to Anthropic or OpenAI when online.
Narratives generate lazily — only when you open the Reef or Wreck tab for the first time. Import time is not narrative time. This avoids API calls on dives you never open, and ensures critter ID has completed before the narrative is written.
A "Regenerate" button appears after new critter IDs are confirmed.
"Think AI is slop? Turn it completely off.
No harm, no foul."
Four-tier pipeline from on-device taxonomy and the free Critter Expert model to confirmed scientific name. Lifetime species database organized by family.

Explore →Your logbook. Smarter than you left it.
Add your Anthropic or OpenAI key in Settings → AI — or point DeepSix at a model running on your own Mac. Or install it and explore everything that works without any of it.
